Nursing Bras: Back to Basic

What to look for in Nursing Bras
You've got a million things on your mind as you prepare for your baby's arrival. And even though shopping for nursing bras might not seem as important as finishing up the nursery or buying a crib, you'll soon discover that the right one can make a world even before the baby is born.

Before you even begin shopping, take the time to learn what types of nursing bras are available.

Underwire nursing bras: Regardless of their size, some women prefer the additional support underwire nursing bras provide. It's important to ensure that the underwire
doesn't put pressure on the breasts and that the entire breast tissue fits is in the cup. Failing to do this may lead to blocked milk ducts or even mastitis.

Softcup nursing bras: For women that prefer a bra without an underwire, there also are softcup nursing bras available. Many women feel that these offer support in a more comfortable manner.

Feeding time
It's hard to predict what your feeding style will be, or even what baby's preference will be, but it's important to consider these factors as you shop for nursing bras.

There are some nursing bras that are equipped with flaps that simply open to reveal the breast when it's time to nurse. The flaps on nursing bras vary. Some hook or fasten at the top while others close in the middle of the chest. If you opt to go with this style, make sure the flap opens easily and exposes enough of the breast to make it simple for the baby to nurse.

There also are nursing bras that are designed to be lifted above the breasts or pushed to one side. With no hooks to deal with, these nursing bras are very easy to maneuver with a single hand. Typically, these are made of softer fabrics, making them a comfortable option as well as easy.
